From Maker to Mentor: Vito Selma’s Next Chapter

At 18, Cebuano designer Vito Selma joined Movement 8, a collective of Filipino creatives that introduced “Tropical Moderne” to the world. Under the mentorship of design leaders Kenneth Cobonpue, Debbie Palao, and Luisa Robinson, he learned an enduring principle: great design starts with understanding materials—their strengths and their limits.

Two decades later, Selma is a second-generation furniture maker with a global following. His works, rooted in sustainability and natural inspiration, are featured in high-end residential and hospitality projects. This year marks a new chapter with the launch of Archipelago Design Ventures Inc., a materials library and consultancy in Bonifacio Global City, created with partner Emerson Lee.
Inspired by design hubs in Milan and Bangkok, Archipelago offers architects, designers, and students access to a curated selection of materials. The 270-square-meter showroom reflects Selma’s philosophy of innovation through nature and reuse. Rice husks, coffee grounds, garlic peels, fish scales, and sawdust are reimagined as lamps, surfaces, and accessories, alongside inventive wood and stone pieces.
Selma’s “Geo” collection, influenced by string art, transforms geometry into sculptural furniture, while collaborations with young designers and international partners expand Archipelago’s reach. The company also provides layout services and sourcing support, helping clients achieve practical yet creative solutions.
This summer, Selma will open a new showroom in Makati, featuring both his high-end line and Casa Selma, a collection designed during the pandemic to support local communities through affordable, collaborative pieces.
From rethinking discarded materials to mentoring the next generation, Selma continues to shape Filipino design identity—bridging tradition, innovation, and global relevance.
